Philosophy, and Film Authorship (also known as auteur theory) are the two focuses Mason uses to construct his reviews and articles. His philosophy articles focus on analyzing the intersection between film and philosophy, and uses films as catalysts for philosophical exploration, unpacking the philosophical dialectics in various films, such as The Prestige, Arrival, and The Sunset Limited. His articles focusing on auteur theory analyze the careers of various filmmakers, tracing themes and developments throughout the director's career. He has analyzed the careers of Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan.   His reviews synthesize both of these topics, focusing on the previous work of the director and how it influences the film being reviewed, and briefly touching on philosophical topics contained in the film.
