Taken
Splice Film Festival 2013 The documentary "Taken" can be summarized in one sentence, and this is done through its subtitle: “A meditation on death.” Every since Melody Ritchey, the director's first close encounter with death and several subsequent encounters that same year, she struggled to accept the fact that it’s real, and even worse…inevitable. The documentary chronicles her meditations during my commute to and from college, tying them all together by applying both the definition of the word “taken” and its antonym, “given.” Interwoven amongst this is an interview with Mr. Ernie Heffner, President of Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, and the perfect candidate for the documentary since he, too, thinks about death every day. Mr. Heffner describes his experience as a funeral director and emphasizes the way his jobs forces him to keep life in perspective. The film has an up-ending (as optimistic as it can be, considering the subject matter), stressing the importance of being remembered. |
